Pilot projects in Strassen and KäerjengWhen will the 'intelligent traffic lights' finally become operational?

RTL Today
Almost ten years ago, the municipalities of Strassen and Käerjeng were promised intelligent lights able to react automatically to traffic. This pilot project is supposed to improve local traffic flow, however, neither of the systems is operational yet.

The Route d’Arlon in Strassen is one of the main traffic routes into and out of the capital in the morning. This is why the municipality of Strassen is at the top of the list for this new intelligent traffic light system. We have been waiting for almost ten years for the project to become a reality, says Strassen Mayor Nico Pundel.

The municipality of Käerjeng has been promised a similar pilot project. But, here too, progress has yet to materialise.

In response to a request, Minister for Mobility and Public Works François Bausch stated that it is in fact a very complex system from a technical point of view. He added that between 2018 and 2020, the Bridges and Roads Authority bought the necessary equipment and agreements were then drawn up with the municipalities.

Intelligent traffic lights have already been installed at individual locations. Gradually, other junctions will be equipped with the same system. Nevertheless, it is not yet known when the system will finally become operational.
