The opening of the first section of the A3 widened to 2×3 lanes, between the Aire de Berchem and the Croix de Gasperich, originally scheduled for April 2024, had been delayed by several months due to construction setbacks, as well as a behind-the-scenes hiccup revealed by the Director of Bridges and Roads in early January 2025. Roland Fox explained that part of the delay was caused by the non-delivery of signage pillars: “A tender was launched to find a supplier for the gantries, but it was cancelled.”

A year later, numerous concrete bases line the sides of the A3, yet the pillars still have not been installed. So what is the situation now?

“Nine pillars” have indeed been ordered, assures the Administration of Bridges and Roads, contacted by RTL Infos. They will be bolted onto their bases in the coming months. “By early June”, the nine directional gantries, equipped with LED panels, will span the 3.5 km of the widened A3.

The installation of the first four pillars is “scheduled for late March, early April”, while the remaining five will be installed in two stages around “late May, early June,” according to the Administration of Bridges and Roads. These pillars will be equipped with both “dynamic panels and directional signs, depending on their location and function”, the administration explains. The total cost of these structures is “around €10 million”.

Measuring between 45m and 49m in length, the pillars are essential for managing traffic flow and safety on the country’s busiest motorway. The dynamic signage allows drivers to be informed of disruptions and to display real-time traffic management measures. It also enables traffic rules to be adjusted according to conditions such as weather, slowdowns, or congestion.

Dynamic speed regulation has been in place on the A31 since October 2015. Eight electronic signs installed between Richemont and the Luxembourg border provide information on traffic disruptions and travel times. Their purpose is to ask drivers to adjust their speed in order to maintain traffic flow as close as possible to the highway’s maximum capacity.

On the A3 in Luxembourg, the installation of dynamic signs will coincide with the activation of two new carpooling cameras. These cameras, placed between the Croix de Gasperich and the Berchem rest area, automatically flash any vehicle that does not have at least two occupants on board. The cameras entered a testing phase on December 1, 2025, as announced by the Administration of Bridges and Roads.
