Online shopping continues to drive a surge in parcel volumes. This month alone, Luxembourg’s postal service is set to distribute approximately one million parcels, having already peaked in the second week of December with 306,000 shipments.
The period from Black Friday through Christmas marks the most demanding time of the year for postal workers. A clear trend persists: while the number of traditional Christmas cards declines, parcel volumes rise annually.
“This year, we have handled one million more parcels than last year and will end up with around nine and a half million in total. It has been quite a challenge for the entire team here at the sorting centre,” said Mario Treinen, Director of Post Courrier.
For those still awaiting a last-minute gift, hope remains. On Tuesday, lorries were still queued at the Krakelshaff sorting centre at 11am, unloading parcels destined for Wednesday’s final pre-Christmas delivery round – the last major push in another record-breaking year.
“We operate about 380 postal vans, plus another 250 delivery vans, along with vehicles supplying our 172 Pack-up stations, all departing from this centre,” Treinen explained.
Delivery drivers are keenly aware of the importance of their mission during this period.
“These are the last gifts, the last parcels – so it will be done. They will be delivered in time for Christmas,” said delivery driver Givens Siala Tusamba during his round in Schuller.
