School lunches'Veggie Monday' initiative to continue after successful first year

RTL Today
Last year, three of Luxembourg City's secondary schools participated in the 'Veggie Monday' pilot project, a successful initiative to promote meat-free meals in Luxembourg's education sector.

In response to a recent parliamentary enquiry from DP colleagues MP Carole Hartmann and Claude Lamberty, Minister of Education, Children and Youth Claude Meisch labelled the ‘Veggie Monday’ pilot project a great success.

The initiative was carried out be three secondary schools from the Geesseknäppchen campus in Luxembourg City last year. Thanks to the ‘Food4Future’ concept, demand for vegetarian and vegan menus has been on the rise, which is why Lycée Athenée, Lycée Aline Mayrisch, and Lycée Michel Rodange all want to continue offering only meat-free menus on Mondays.

44% of menus sold last year were vegetarian, 5.4% vegan. Consumption of fish and meat went down by a fifth.

Restopolis, the firm tasked by the Ministry with managing school lunches, is therefore now also offering to only provide vegetarian and vegan meals to other schools on Mondays.

Close to 20,000 students eat in school cafeterias on a daily basis. Five years ago, that number was only 12,000.
