Pitch closedVC Mamer beach volleyball club out of action after vandalism

On Wednesday night, intruders broke into a chalet belonging to VC Mamer beach volleyball club, leaving the premises damaged.

Witnesses spotted six youths partying at the club premises on Wednesday afternoon, said VC Mamer secretary Allison Teusch. A security firm dispatched officers to the scene to disperse the gathering, made up of three boys and three girls aged between 16 and 18. The youths abandoned the chalet, where they had set up a barbecue, and ran away when the officers approached.

Members of the club promptly went to clean up the mess, but the matter was not resolved for long. That night, neighbours said they heard noises at the site at around 3am on Thursday morning. This time, the vandals broke into the chalet once more and destroyed whatever they could find.

As if that wasn’t enough, the intruders found a nearby washing-up wagon, which had been booked for the club’s summer festival over the next few days. The vandals broke into the wagon and smashed plates, glasses, and other crockery, leaving the shards strewn across the sand.

The beach volleyball pitch has now been closed as a result of the broken glass, as this represents a risk to players.

Teusch said the beach would remain closed until further notice, as they could not confirm a reopening date at present. The company that usually maintains the pitch, using specialist equipment to filter the sand, is currently shut for the holidays.

The police were informed of the matter and attended the scene to collect evidence.

VC Mamer has also appealed for potential witnesses on their social media accounts.
