On Thursday, the Grand Ducal police sought to spread awareness of the increase in pickpocketing incidents in the capital, both on the streets and on public transport. Since the Christmas markets opened, the number of police patrols has been increased, with officers handing out flyers to make the public aware of the risk. The majority of cases have been reported in peak times when the trams are full, for example.
On Wednesday afternoon, two underage offenders were caught in the act of stealing a wallet on the tram. The public prosecutor’s office ordered the arrest of the two minors, who were to be held in a closed facility. However, the youth facility in Dreiborn was full and could not accommodate the two, and they were brought to Schrassig prison instead. During their arrest, the two offenders gave false identities, which were later clarified in collaboration with foreign authorities.
