Police are reporting a sharp increase in pickpocketing incidents on public transport, particularly on trams, coinciding with the opening of the Christmas markets in Luxembourg City.

Authorities note a significant rise in thefts not only at the festive markets but also across the transit network. In response, police will deploy additional officers to provide a greater visible presence, especially during peak hours, and encourage the public to approach them directly with any concerns.

Criminals typically exploit crowded spaces and moments of distraction to steal valuables, with victims often unaware until long after the theft has occurred. Police urge anyone who has been targeted to file an official report. Suspicious behavior can be reported immediately via the emergency number 113.

How to protect yourself from pickpockets

  • Avoid distractions in overcrowded areas and try to maintain a safe distance from others on public transport.
  • Be extra cautious when boarding/exiting, as thieves often strike during the direct contact of these moments.
  • Use inner jacket pockets for wallets and phones, and ensure handbags are closed and held securely under your arm with the opening facing your body.
  • Never let your bag out of your sight, and ensure others cannot see inside it.
