
According to German authorities, a BMW was travelling in the direction of Gerolstein before swerving into the opposite lane for as yet unknown reasons. The car then collided with three oncoming vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the BMW was seriously injured, while his passenger did not survive the impact. A 76-year-old passenger in another car was also killed on impact. Police reported that three other people sustained minor injuries in the other vehicles.

The Trier public prosecutor’s office has been tasked with the investigation of this tragic incident. Two medical helicopters were deployed to the scene, as well as a police helicopter from Prüm, Germany.
The motorway section between Fleringen and Weinsheim was closed to traffic for many hours to allow emergency services to carry out their work. The road was reopened at 6.30pm.
