An accident between a bus and a tram in Kirchberg was reported on Friday morning at 9.20am. The tram was derailed, and the bus was pushed on to the pavement, hitting a parked motorbike, a tree, and a pole before coming to a halt.
Five people were injured in the incident, three tram passengers and both the tram and bus drivers. One person on the tram was more severely injured when the tram came to a sudden halt, falling forward.
The tram was carrying between 30 and 50 passengers at the time of the incident, while the bus contained a single passenger alongside the driver. No one in the vicinity of the accident was hurt when the crash happened. The authorities have confirmed that there have been no life-threatening injuries in the accident.
The collision occurred on Rue Alphonse Weicker, between Avenue John F Kennedy and Rue Jean Monnet. Rue Alphonse Weicker was closed to traffic until 3 pm.
The authorities are currently checking if the traffic lights were functioning properly. They are currently not functioning at all. As of 4 pm, the tram line has become fully operational again.
Luxtram examined the immediate area surrounding the tram and used a special crane to put the tram back on the tracks. The security perimeter surrounding the accident was increased for the operation, which involved moving the front part of the tram back onto the tracks.
The tram was not in a state to be driven back to the warehouse itself. Luxtram brought out a second tram to transport the tram back to the depot.
Three ambulances and first responders attended the scene, with 22 team members, as well as a number of fire engines.
Luxtram's Facebook page detailed temporary public transport diversions. Both Luxtram and Ville de Luxembourg employees will be in Kirchberg to guide public transport users to diversions. Whilst the tram is operating at all stops, the bus stops Réimerwee (affecting bus line 1), Chambre de Commerce (bus line 20), and Alphonse Weicker (bus lines 1 and 20) are temporarily out of service.
Earlier in the day, there was a replacement shuttle bus service between the Luxexpo and National Library tram stops.
