Due to pandemicTourism in Luxembourg off to a slow start

RTL Today
An average of one million tourists flock to Luxembourg each year. Tourism is slowly making a comeback after its pandemic-induced slumber.

Frank Leonardy, who works as a tour guide at Vianden Castle, confirmed to RTL that tourists slowly seem to be returning to the Grand Duchy. The summer season, he explained, usually starts in April and lasts until October. This year, it started two months later.

Needless to say, tourist attractions like the castle sold much fewer entry tickets this season but they also, according to Leonardy, took advantage of the quiet months to carry out renovations.

2019 was a record year. Almost 220,000 tourists visited Vianden Castle. The face of tourism has changed this year. Bigger international groups have been replaced by many local and regional tourists who are rediscovering Luxembourg. Lenoardy also welcomed the fact that the castle is not yet flooded by tourists - this makes it easier to respect the precautionary measures.

Other tourist hotspots such as the Grand Ducal palace, the Monument of Remembrance (Gelle Fra), or Knuedler are also quieter than in previous years. Employees at the Luxembourg City Tourist Office also confirmed that tourism is running at a slower pace than usual. The office hopes to adapt to the situation and offer more tours for locals.
