Over the past three months, approximately 350,000 doses of the Covid-19 vaccine were destroyed, contributing to a total loss exceeding 1,100,000 doses. These doses have cost the government more than €23 million, with an additional €14,000 spent on the destruction process.

The primary reason behind the significant vaccine wastage lies in Luxembourg’s commitment to a collective procurement approach within the European Union. This strategy aims to strengthen negotiating positions with vaccine producers but comes with the consequence of obligated purchases, leading to unavoidable disposal of certain quantities.

The current inventory of Covid-19 vaccines in Luxembourg still includes more than 40,000 doses designated for children and almost 80,000 doses for adults, all set to expire within the next three months. These figures were provided by Minister of Health and Social Security Martine Deprez in response to a parliamentary question from the Pirate Party.
