The traditional market opened on Friday. For the first time in five years, stalls have returned to Place Guillaume II, albeit with a slightly different setup. On the initiative of the City of Luxembourg, a large covered seating area has been installed in the centre of the square, providing a space for visitors to enjoy their food. Unlike in previous years, there are no large restaurant tents. Both the market and the Octave celebrations will run until 25 May.

As we reported last year, the Octave market (“Mäertchen”) has changed quite a lot over the years. Many people now come for entertainment, whereas it used to be a place where pilgrims would gather for spiritual reasons - you can read more about that here.

The Octave celebration takes place on the third Sunday following Easter and lasts two weeks - to learn more about the Octave celebration and its history, check out one of our previous articles. This years’ theme is ‘Pilgrims’s of Hope’.
