The unemployment rate in Luxembourg remained stable in October, at 5.8%. While the situation has improved, many positions remain unfilled.
As of 31 October 2024, a total of 18,293 people were registered as unemployed in Luxembourg. While unemployment remained stable compared to the previous month, the rate was up year-on-year.
Over the past year, the National Employment Agency (ADEM) observed the biggest increases in unemployment among “the most highly qualified jobseekers (higher education graduates) and those aged between 30 and 44".
In particular, jobs in road transport, catering, IT, and building finishing are among the most affected. According to ADEM, the total number of vacant job positions at the end of October was 6,698.
It should be noted that “the number of vacant positions is decreasing, while the number of newly declared positions is increasing” due to a reduction in the average length of time job offers are open, ADEM explains. This is due to a technicality concerning the recruitment of third-country nationals for specific occupations.
On its website, ADEM also lists the sectors with the greatest demand for workers. These are jobs that do not necessarily match the skills or aspirations of jobseekers, but which account for a large proportion of ADEM’s vacancies:
