Election manifestoThe Left eyes 'open, democratic, and eco-socialist Europe'

As the European elections approach, Luxembourg's youngest-ever candidate list from The Left is campaigning for a Europe rooted in justice, environmental protection, and solidarity, challenging the right-wing surge with a vision of prioritising social rights over economic liberties.

With fewer than four weeks until the European elections, 13 parties in Luxembourg are competing for seats in the European Parliament. On Tuesday, The Left (déi Lénk) outlined the main pillars of their manifesto. The party aims to create a better Europe centred on justice, environmental protection, and solidarity, striving for an open, democratic, and eco-socialist Europe. The manifesto emphasises prioritising social rights over economic liberties.

The party’s list of six candidates ranges in age from 25 to 41, making it the youngest group ever presented in Luxembourg, with an average age just over 30. The youngest candidate, Anastasia Iampolskaia, spoke to our colleagues from RTL Télé, highlighting the right-wing surge as Europe’s greatest danger, particularly concerning migration and asylum policy.

“Europe presents itself as a champion of solidarity, and it’s not for us to decide who receives that solidarity. We must avoid becoming overly selective, determining who may enter and who may not,” Iampolskaia stated.

When asked why she is running for office, Iampolskaia explained, “The various crises I’ve witnessed in my 25 years have motivated me for years to get involved in politics. I always dreamed of working in the European Parliament, initially as an assistant to an MEP. However, I believe we can make significant progress by uniting across Europe to enact change.”

The Left’s main slogan, “Standing Together,” reflects its vision for a Europe that prioritises social issues over profit. The party asserts that it remains committed to the principles that the “traditional left” has abandoned.
