The Left received 9.8% of the vote in Schifflange during the municipal elections in June this year. Admir Civovic, who took on a mandate after having received the second-most ballots in his favour, recently decided to leave the Left again after a brief spell with the party and remain on the local municipal council as an independent.

Furthermore, Civovic has announced that he intends to return to the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), which left just ahead of the municipal elections.

However, Ciovic is not the only one to leave the party, but one of five people in total. He has noted that he feels more comfortable and at ease at the LSAP and that he bumped heads with certain people from the Left: “There was no team spirit, no real team work. In our eyes there was spitefulness and immense jealousy.”

The Left have issued a statement to stress that they want to have their council seat returned since Civovic was voted in as part of their list. The latter, on the other hand, believes that the Left would not have managed to file a complete list without his help and that of the other five people who stepped down.

Gary Diderich, spokesperson of the Left, has little understanding for Civovic’s position, questioning his sincerity for changing back and forth between parties this quickly. The LSAP’s Carlo Feiereisen has shown understanding for the Left’s disappointment, but stresses that they had nothing to do with the change in affiliation: “We did not offer him anything, he came to us. He asked and our committees decided to take him in. Nothing more and nothing less.”

Civovic’s decision will not substantially change the power dynamics in Schifflange, which is jointly run by the LSAP and the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV).
