The Left Party (déi Lénk), in response to these departures, indicated that the individuals cited political differences as the reason for their resignations. Despite their efforts to re-establish dialogue over the past weeks, the party reported that these attempts were unsuccessful, leaving them uncertain about the underlying causes of the departures.
The Left Party is now urging Civovic to relinquish his seat on the Schifflange town council, as stipulated in a declaration of honour he previously signed. According to the party, Civovic was only able to secure his council seat with the support of list votes for the Left Party.
The newspaper Tageblatt first announced his resignation on Wednesday. The article suggests that Civovic may be considering a move to the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP). Should this be the case, and if Civovic does not return his seat to the Left Party, the LSAP-CSV coalition could acquire an additional seat on the Schifflange local council.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Left Party stresses, “The basic rules of democracy and decency demand that Mr Civovic resign and prohibit the LSAP from being brazen accomplices in the shameful theft of a mandate.”
