Luxembourg CityTenants left without electricity or running water after attempted eviction

Tenants in eight furnished studios on Rue Glesener were told to leave their homes by 31 August.

The owner of the premises ordered their expulsion without a court order. On 3 September, a sign was affixed to the door stating the electricity would be cut off the following day.

The tenants have been left without electricity and running water since 4 September. Their treatment has sparked outrage among members of the community - the Mieterschutz Lëtzebuerg tenant protection association staged a protest outside the building, in a move which has garnered support from members of the municipal council and déi Lénk.

The Luxembourg City Social Welfare Office said this was not the first instance in which tenants had been forcibly expelled since the health crisis.

Guy Foetz, a city councillor and a founding member of déi Lénk (the Left) political party, said as long as the party was involved, there would be no eviction, as the matter was a clear violation of the right to housing.

The tenant protection association denounced the proprietor's actions and said it was unacceptable to put such pressure on tenants in order to force them out of their homes.

The proprietor defended their position, saying the building was in poor condition and required renovation, and said no one had been evicted following a court order.
