According to local police in the Canton of Zurich, a serious accident occurred on the southbound lane of the A2 in front of the Gotthard Tunnel, near Wassen, Switzerland.

For reasons that are still unclear, the Luxembourg-registered car crashed after allegedly driving at high speed into another vehicle occupying the right lane. It is claimed the Luxembourgish vehicle then veered into the overtaking lane, where it was pushed into the path of a second car and, ultimately, into a third.

A total of ten people were injured, including four seriously, and taken to hospital.

The damage is extensive and is estimated at around 65,000 Swiss francs (equivalent to around 69,700 euros).

The southbound highway was closed for around 90 minutes while emergency services attended the scene.
