In his answer to a parliamentary question by MPs Yves Cruchten and Mars Di Bartolomeo from the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP), Minister of the Economy Franz Fayot confirmed the latest figures released by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), speaking of “a historic annual increase” of around 13% for some products.
Oil, fat, dairy products, eggs, and vegetables are among the items with the highest price increases.
Food prices account for about a third of the yearly inflation rate, which is at 4.3%.
In November, STATEC already highlighted what it referred to as a “really substantial” increase.
The government currently has no plans to introduce a price cap on food items, as it has done with energy costs. In this context, officials are also still awaiting the Council of State’s opinion on a draft bill that would regulate competition law and allow for the implementation of maximum prices.
