There have been two recent cases of violence at the Schrassig prison. One happened on National Day, while the second incident last week saw a prisoner recently transferred from the juvenile prison in Dreiborn attack and injure six guards.
Djennas explained that the Schrassig facility is currently overloaded and subject to extreme heat, causing tensions among people and provoking an increased number of altercations.
He also noted that there has long been a staff shortage: “Nobody is really to blame for that. A new prison is set to open in Sanem, and we have lost people to their operations already. They are still recruiting, which means we simply lack enough employees. Surveillance cannot be ensured, which impacts safety.”
At the moment, about 290 people work at the Schrassig prison. Djennas argued that a minimum of 20 additional recruits is necessary. The Association is also advocating for more practical training for future guards.
Djennas elaborated: “A lot of theory is being taught, including matters relating to drug addiction and human rights. This is important, but so is practical experience. How to react in case of a cell fire or an armed attack, or how to react proportionately to a given situation.”
The Association president also warned that due to staff shortages, young apprentices are at times required to go into the field earlier than planned. Nevertheless, he ensured that everything is being done to accompany them as well as possible.
