Luxembourg's Special Police Unit (USP) remains consistently active, executing an average of around 250 operations each year, a figure that has remained steady despite the fact that the number of USP officers has increased by a fifth in recent years.

Minister of Internal Security Léon Gloden addressed the complexity surrounding overtime work among USP officers. He highlighted the oversight committee, on which trade unions are also represented, tasked with ensuring accurate recording and compensation for these additional hours.

On average, each USP member engages in overtime work approximately 20 times annually.

USP operations naturally carry inherent risks. In 2023, a dozen officers experienced workplace accidents, one of which occurred during an operation. Since the beginning of 2024, there have been four workplace accidents within the USP.

To uphold fairness and parity within the special unit, every USP member receives a monthly risk bonus, irrespective of their status. Minister Gloden emphasised this commitment to equality in response to a parliamentary question from MP Dan Biancalana of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP).
