Reversed fuel tourismSP98 now cheaper in France than in Luxembourg

The price increased by 12.9 cents to attain the record-high of €2.127 per litre.

This means that for once, the Grand Duchy no longer has the best prices to offer in the greater region, which means that some motorists already make trips across the French border to fill up their vehicles. According to local reports, the Leclerc petrol station in Thionville even ran out of SP98 on Sunday morning.

Where to fill up

For one, it is important to remember that contrary to Luxembourg, where all petrol stations use the same maximum price standard, French stations regularly offer petrol below market price as a method of competing.

According to France’s official petrol price website, a number of stations in the Moselle region offered SP98 at a lower rate than those in Luxembourg on Sunday, 29 May.

Here are some examples:

• ESSO (Phalsbourg): €1.939 per litre
• LECLERC (Thionville): €1.945 per litre
  
• AGIP (Farébersviller): €2.149 per litre
• ESSO (Betting): €2.049 per litre
• ESSO (Creutzwald): €2.059 per litre

These represent some of the most current prices, but they nevertheless remain subject to extreme fluctuations.

With the help of the following websites and applications, you can monitor the evolution of prices at the petrol stations closest to the Luxembourgish border:

• The safest source is France’s official petrol price website, prix-carburants.gouv.fr, which provides price updates every ten minutes.
• The website plein-moins-cher.fr provides a similar overview based on government data, but updates less frequently.
• In terms of applications, ‘Gasoil Now’, ‘Essence & Co’, and ‘Gaspal’ inform users about close-by stations thanks to geolocation. ‘Waze’, a similar application, further allows users to share information with others.
