Smoke detectors are now mandatory in Luxembourg residences as of 1 January 2020.
There should be at least one smoke alarm per bedroom as well as one in the hallway which would function as the main escape route in cases of fire. Newbuilds must be equipped with sufficient smoke detectors, while there is a three year transition period which applies to older homes.
The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps said proprietors without smoke alarms would not be fined, but it would take the form of a self-punishment, affecting their personal safety.
Marc Hengen, managing director of the ACA (Luxembourg Insurance Association) said the new law was a good idea, stating that insurers would not be able to use them as an excuse not to pay out.
To avoid false alarms, it is not advisable to install smoke alarms in bathrooms, garages or near cooking stations. In 2018, the Ministry of Home Affairs provided households with a free smoke detector, but they are easy enough to purchase. It is always advisable to check they work properly.
