
The law will enter effect on 1 January 2020 and will make smoke alarms mandatory in all buildings containing at least one residence.
The Health Directorate revealed that home fires have caused an average of two deaths a year between 1998 and 2015 and highlighted the importance of the prompt detection of any smoke.
Citing other countries as examples, the draft bill revealed that statistics from other countries that made smoke alarms mandatory have seen a drop in home fires and fires requiring fire brigade intervention.
For existing homes, owners will have a transition period of three years to have smoke alarms fitted.
