The Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) has taken stock of its operations during the National Day eve celebrations.

While emergency services had plenty to deal with, the night was fortunately not considered exceptional, CGDIS director of Operational Coordination Tom Barnig told RTL early on Tuesday morning.

According to Barnig, the preventive measures and public warnings issued ahead of the festivities appear to have been effective. CGDIS teams assisted a total of 93 people over the course of the evening, 15 of whom were taken to hospital.

Fire and fall reported

Two incidents nevertheless stood out. A small fire broke out beneath the Pont Adolphe following the fireworks display, but firefighters were able to extinguish it within minutes. In Clausen, a person fell from a bridge into the water and was also rescued quickly.

Due to the heat, a special operation had been put in place to ensure safety during the celebrations. An additional 140 firefighters were deployed in Luxembourg City.

Two medical posts were set up during the night, while eight ambulances were on standby and 19 teams patrolled the area on foot.

More emergency teams deployed on National Day

Emergency services are also providing support during the National Day celebrations themselves. For the military parade, 72 firefighters, seven ambulances, and one unit from the Emergency Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) are on site to deal with any potential incidents.

Emergency teams will remain on heightened alert until the end of the week, supported by the Luxembourg Red Cross, the army, and Luxambulance, among others.

Crisis unit continues to monitor the situation

The crisis unit had already reported on Monday that no major incidents had occurred during the day. By midnight, the CGDIS had responded to 300 incidents across the country.

Hospital emergency departments treated slightly more patients than average. The crisis unit stated that the situation will continue to be monitored and assessed.
