As of 4 November, customs officials and the Environment Agency will collaborate on a national campaign inspecting shops throughout the country. The officials will check whether shops are still providing plastic bags free of charge, as bags are supposed to be subject to a small fee.

Any business found giving out free bags on two separate occasions could risk fines ranging between €500 and €1,000. The Environment Agency will publish its findings in a report once the campaign has concluded.
