Shared living does not fall under PAG regulations, according to Minister of Home Affairs Taina Bofferding and Minister for Housing Henri Kox. The joined statement followed a parliamentary inquiry by LSAP deputies Mars Di Bartolomeo and Yves Cruchten.
Both ministers emphasised that the societal phenomenon demanded a nuanced analysis of the problem.
The PAG regulations are only designed to regulate construction and habitation zones. Bofferding and Kox underlined that municipalities were not to regulate rent agreements and that a new draft law for this problem was needed. Denying people housing because they are neither related, married, or in a civil partnership could be considered discriminatory. A new law is currently being designed by the ministry of housing.
No governmental intervention is yet planned in the case of the municipality of Esch. Although there appears to be risk of law infringement, the administration prefers to await the final decision and the finalisation of the new respective laws.
