Leadership transition underwaySenior members of Luxembourg's police directorate request retirement

RTL Today
Luxembourg faces a notable shift in its police leadership as four out of six key figures express their intention to retire, signalling a potential generational change within the national police directorate.

Among those seeking retirement is Philippe Schrantz, the Director General of Luxembourg’s police force. Joining him in the decision are Deputy Director General Donat Donven, Central Director of Resources and Remits of the Grand-Ducal Police Force René Lindenlaub, and Central Director of the Judicial Police Daniel Reiffers. The police press office confirmed this information to our colleagues from RTL.lu.

The process for retirement requires a formal request to be submitted to the responsible minister at least six months in advance. As reported by the newspaper Luxemburger Wort, Schrantz and Donven could have initiated this process last spring but deliberately waited until after the October elections, providing the minister with a calm period to consider and fill the impending vacancies within the police directorate.

While Daniel Reiffers already has a confirmed retirement date of 1 April 2024, the procedures for the other three leaders are still in progress. The decision lies with Minister of Internal Security Léon Gloden, whose approval is pending.

Following a recent meeting between Philippe Schrantz and Léon Gloden on Friday, the Minister of Internal Security told RTL that there were no obstacles to approving Schrantz’s retirement request. The coming months will see the ministry carefully examining how to reorganise the police directorate in light of these impending departures.

Information obtained by RTL suggests that Philippe Schrantz is expected to retire on 1 June 2024.
