Ten dogs are currently doing the training programme to become search and rescue dogs. In a Bissen forest, they train how to find missing people to prepare for possible emergencies. It takes two years for a dog to complete the respective training, and the programme has to be repeated every two years.
The Red Cross’ canine unit completes missions both in Luxembourg and abroad. The last international mission was in Haiti after the earthquake in 2010. However, at the moment, they are more often needed right here at home.
The search and rescue training sessions often take place in forests or abandoned spaces, and at times the teams go abroad to complete further programmes. The Red Cross always has an open door for new recruits who want to become members of the canine unit.
