Last Saturday, a fight broke out following an under-13 football match between Red Star Merl and US Rumelange.
On Tuesday, police confirmed to RTL that they were called to the scene following reports of an assault.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, Red Star Merl described the post-match events as “unfortunate incidents” and characterised the situation as “chaotic”. US Rumelange alleged that at least one parent of a Red Star Merl youth player became violent and struck several players. The club has since filed a formal complaint with the police.
Red Star Merl expressed deep regret over the incident, stating, “violence has no place on a football field – especially when children are involved.” The club emphasised its commitment to resolving the situation and pledged full cooperation with relevant authorities. However, it declined to take an official position at this time, citing unclear circumstances and the circulation of unverified information.
In response to the incident, Red Star Merl announced plans to "[strengthen] the supervision” of its coaches, volunteer referees, officials, and parent volunteers. The club intends to appeal to the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) to more clearly define the roles of matchday participants, including referees. Additionally, Red Star Merl called for the FLF to strengthen the focus on education in coach training programmes.
