On Saturday afternoon, an altercation involving a parent occurred following a match between the U13 teams of Red Star Merl and US Rumelange. A father of one of the players allegedly attacked at least one young player after the game concluded.

The police confirmed the incident to RTL. Elvedin Muhovic, a member of Rumelange’s municipal executive board (“Schäfferot”), expressed his dismay in a Facebook post, stating, “What planet are we living on? How can something like this happen?! Instead of setting a good example! Zero tolerance for the father, and I sincerely hope that the necessary consequences will be drawn.”

A fight involving several individuals was reported to the police at around 4.05pm. Upon arriving at the scene, officers were informed that a player had been violently pushed during the match. Subsequently, the father of the affected player reportedly ran onto the pitch and allegedly assaulted the player responsible for the initial push. The parents of the accused player have been scheduled to meet with the police to file a formal complaint. Authorities have indicated that additional eyewitness accounts are needed to fully reconstruct the events.

In a report by the newspaper Tageblatt, all parties involved were given the opportunity to share their perspectives. Paul Philipp, president of the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF), commented on the broader implications of the incident. While acknowledging that such behaviour could be seen as a reflection of societal issues, he emphasised the importance of ensuring that the right individuals are held accountable. “If, in this case, the children were to be punished, there is a risk of punishing the wrong people,” Philipp stated.

The game kicked off in Merl at 2.30pm on Saturday.
