Police were alerted the a mass brawl in a car park in Foetz on 1 January. Around 20 people were involved in the violent altercation.

Security personnel at the scene had informed police officers that one assailant was suspected of carrying a firearm. Officers managed to identify the man in question and ordered him to drop the weapon. He was taken into custody with great difficulty. The 32-calibre revolver was seized.

Another brawler tried to strike one of the officers with a bottle but failed. The officer nevertheless got punched in the face. Police were forced to use pepper spray but the situation could only be de-escalated when reinforcements arrived at the scene. A second police officer also suffered injuries.

The public prosecutor's office ordered the arrest of two people who were involved in the brawl.

Police launched a fresh appeal for witnesses this Tuesday. Potential witnesses are urged to call Luxembourg City's police at 244 40 1000.
