The crisis cell and POST released further details on Friday at 5pm, 48 hours after the incident.
The cause of Wednesday's problems on POST's network was a cyberattack, the operator itself has now confirmed, along with the crisis cell convened by Prime Minister Luc Frieden in the early afternoon on Friday.
It was a very targeted attack carried out at a very high technical level, POST said 48 hours on. The perpetrator has yet to be identified, but the operator is preparing a complaint to the public prosecutor's office.
The aim of the attack was to seriously disrupt services. The hackers exploited a weakness in software, but POST confirmed that no data was stolen or destroyed, with investigators establishing that there had been no intrusion into its systems.
The attack brought down POST's mobile and fixed-line telephone networks and its internet services for around four hours on Wednesday. On Thursday, POST officials had said they had no indication of an external attack.
Technical analyses are currently under way and efforts are being made to identify those behind the attack. The High Commission for National Protection is coordinating the analyses in close cooperation with all the actors involved, according to the crisis cell.
