Spring is a blessing for some and a curse for others. Between 12 and 15% of the population are allergic to pollen and often find themselves confined to their homes to escape the unwelcome affliction.
Luxembourg and the Grand Est's warning bulletins currently indicate high levels of birch and ash pollen. The pollen count speaks for itself: according to Luxembourg's aerobiology laboratory and the Atmo-Grand Est bulletin, more than 1,000 birch pollen per m3 of air were recorded this week. The count even reached a staggering 2,000 pollen per m3 on Wednesday.
Pollen season is expected to last another three weeks, and the worst is potentially yet to come: levels up to 5,000-10,000 pollen per m3 of air are possible at the peak of the pollen season.
People suffering from pollen allergies are advised to ventilate their home early in the morning or late at night, which is when pollen counts are usually lowest. The precautionary stay-at-home maxim of course also applies.
