The campaign is organised by Roadpol, the European Roads Policing Network, aiming to reduce excess speeding, a frequent cause behind deadly road accidents.

The “Speedmarathon” takes place on Friday of this week, 19 April, with extra police presence and checks.

The campaign aims to make citizens more aware of the great danger of excessive speed. Therefore, police will not only publish information about the checks on its social media platforms, but also publish messages about prevention, such as photo reports.

More than three million motorists checked in 2022
In 2023, the Speed Marathon was held for the tenth time. 19 countries participated in the 2022 campaign. During the European operation, more than 14,900 police officers checked the speed of more than 3,100,000 drivers at no fewer than 10,500 checkpoints. They found 104,315 violations and arrested and fined 27,963 drivers on the spot. 76,352 drivers were fined by mail, while many offenders had their driving licences revoked.

That year, a Luxembourg driver was caught doing 182km/h in a 90km/h zone.

Where should police check? Let them know

On Tuesday, citizens have the opportunity to propose specific locations to police where excess speeding is common. Users can mention towns, villages and even streets to law enforcement via @policelux on Instagram.
