Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents, with activities such as sending messages, using apps, or browsing social media diverting motorists’ attention from the road. Consequently, using a smartphone while driving is prohibited unless the vehicle is parked. Violating this rule can result in a €250 fine and a loss of four points on the driver’s licence.

However, distractions are not limited to mobile phone use. Other activities like lighting a cigarette, adjusting on-board instruments or the navigation system, and even engaging in conversations using a hands-free kit or with a passenger can distract drivers. These distractions affect not only car drivers, but also motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

In addition to their focus on distracted driving, police will also conduct routine checks for on-board documents. Drivers must be able to present the following original documents during a check, with the exception of the certificate of conformity:

  • Driving licence or apprenticeship certificate
  • Training booklet (if applicable)
  • Vehicle insurance certificate
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Latest roadworthiness certificate (if applicable)
  • Tax sticker
  • Certificate of conformity or a certified copy by the National Society of Automotive Traffic (SNCA) for all vehicles registered from 1 February 2016
