On Wednesday, Minister of Equality between Women and Men Taina Bofferding presented the figures on domestic violence for the year 2021. They are slightly down, by almost 3%. Last year, the police intervened 917 times for domestic violence and the public prosecutor’s office authorised 249 evictions (-10%).
The number of victims remains stable: 1,712 in 2021. 61% of victims were female, 39% male. 389 victims were minors. Two thirds of the perpetrators of domestic violence were men, the remaining third were women.
Recidivism is a problem: almost half of the perpetrators of domestic violence were already known to the police for similar acts.
Domestic violence mostly takes place within couples. Victims and perpetrators are often unable to separate, not only because of financial constraints. While domestic violence affects all socioeconomic classes, the representative of the public prosecutor’s office pointed out that the wealthier a person is, the easier it is to separate.
