On Saturday, the Grand Ducal Police conducted a joint operation with their German and French counterparts to monitor the border situation ahead of the summer holidays. Although the official holiday period has not yet begun in the Grand Duchy, some regions in our neighbouring countries are already off for the summer.

Police officers thus showed a joint presence at the border, where they controlled cars, camper vans, and caravans. Laurent Lentz, director of the police's road department, highlighted a number of security issues that people tend to underestimate: "Drivers need to be careful to take enough breaks in between. Luggage should never lie around unattached, as this can cause additional damages in case of an accident." Similarly, people should understand that a heavy load will significantly change the overall breaking distance of a vehicle, Lentz underlined.

Philippe Glorian, commanding officer of the French motorway police, praised the joint effort with their Luxembourgish colleagues: "In terms of communication, the increased presence helps us get the message across to our drivers that only because they are changing countries, this does not mean they no longer have to obey road traffic regulations."

After a full day of checks, the police issued 31 fines in total. Half of them were awarded to people for overloading their vehicles, while others were punished for using their phone behind the wheel.
