Luxembourg joined global celebrations Thursday following the historic election of Pope Leo XIV, with churches across the Grand Duchy preparing to ring their bells in tribute to the first pontiff from the US.

On Thursday, 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost made history as the first US-born pope, taking the name Leo XIV. Luxembourg joined global celebrations, with church bells across the country set to ring for ten minutes at 12.15pm on Friday in tribute.

The Luxembourgish Church swiftly expressed its joy over Prevost’s election in a statement Thursday evening, announcing the bell-ringing as a gesture of gratitude.

The government also extended congratulations, with Prime Minister Luc Frieden recalling his meeting with the then-cardinal during Pope Francis’ visit to Luxembourg last September.

Grand Duke Henri added his voice in an official message, wishing Pope Leo XIV a pontificate marked by “peace, dialogue among nations, and universal fraternity.”
