Building works will begin mid-2021 and are scheduled to be completed by 2024. The total budget for construction, development, and equipment amounts to more than €77 million. MPs voted in favour of the project on Thursday. The archive forms a key part of Luxembourg's cultural development plan for 2018-2028.
The new building will be bigger than its predecessor and offer better conditions for archival storage. The indoor temperature and general security measures will be improved. The building will boast 7 floors and its close proximity to the university is hoped to facilitate archival research.
Architectural firm Paul Bretz, Milestone Consulting Engineers and BLS Energieplan Ingéniers-Conseils designed the building.
