Luxembourg City’s tram network continues to expand with several key developments underway.
A significant milestone was reached last week with the opening of permanent, optimised platforms at Howald station in Luxembourg City. The new stop, located approximately 50 metres closer to the main transport interchange than its temporary predecessor, aims to better serve the rapidly growing neighbourhood and increase ridership potential.
“The permanent station couldn’t be built initially due to ongoing land acquisition discussions,” explained Helge Dorstewitz, Director of Luxtram. He confirmed that “those have now been resolved, the second part of the bridge has been built, and we are now converting the station to its final form.”
The current operational network spans roughly 16 kilometres, with multiple extensions in progress. Since May 2025, construction has been ongoing on a new Kirchberg line running from the Pfaffenthal stop via Boulevard Konrad Adenauer to the European School, which is scheduled to open at the start of the 2027 academic year. A subsequent phase will extend this line to the Kuebebierg area and onward via Boulevard Pierre Frieden towards Luxexpo.
The next major stages of expansion will focus on connections from Place de l’Étoile, with lines planned to serve Cloche d’Or and, via Route d’Arlon, the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL). Both of these major projects are targeted for completion by 2035.
In parallel to these routes, Luxtram expects to begin construction on the Hollerich section – serving the new New-Hollerich neighbourhood – as early as 2027, with the goal of making it operational by 2029, Dorstewitz stated.
Luxtram will also launch work on a new Maintenance and Stabling Centre (CRM) in Cloche d’Or. Following the recent passage of the necessary financing law by the Chamber of Deputies, earthworks are scheduled to begin later this year.
Service frequency on the expanding network will be determined by future ridership, Dorstewitz noted. Although final annual figures are not yet available, Luxtram reports strong performance in 2025, having transported more than 35 million passengers over the past 12 months.
