A collaborative effort on behalf of security services, police officers and the public managed to hinder a thief's escape in Luxembourg City.
As the culprit ran away from security towards Rue Notre-Dame, he ran past a police patrol unit. After the pursuing security officer explained what was going on, the police started the chase on foot. Meanwhile, on the Grand Rue, a pedestrian and motorist who recognised the situation at hand blocked the criminal's path and stopped him from fleeing until the police caught up. The culprit's accomplice, who ran in a different direction, was not found.
A charge was filed against the would-be thief and his unknown accomplice at the police station. Since the detained had not stolen anything in the end, however, the person was allowed to leave the station that same evening. Police also thanked the two citizens who helped stopped the perpetrator in his tracks and contributed to the arrest.
In a further incident, security staff were able to prevent one man from stealing €300 worth of items from a shop on Rue des Scillas. Once the police were called it emerged that the man had been involved in multiple counts of theft in the previous weeks. The perpetrator was arrested and sent to Schrassig to be formally charged by the examining magistrate on Sunday morning.
In terms of corona-related violations, the police stated that in general, the public was keeping to safety guidelines. However two men were charged for sitting in café after midnight. Officers also noticed that the room smelled strongly of cannabis and what looked like a joint in ashtray. The two men admitted to having smoked, and a report was filed.
