The non-profit organisation's letter cited positive experiences abroad and said they did not understand Luxembourg's reluctance. Wearing a protective mask is already an obligation in several other countries.

The president of the association, René Pizzaferri, wrote that Austrians were required to wear a mask in order to shop.

In Asia, these masks are an integral part of culture. Given the current crisis period, such protection methods for the nose and mouth could quickly become a social standard.

Masks have been worn since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in countries such as China, South Korea or Taiwan, where the epidemic is now regressing.

The organisation's letter proposed masks be used to help interrupt the chain of infection - although they are limited in terms of protecting against infection, they can help stop infection from spreading to others.

According to the association, the information that masks were useless against Covid-19, often reiterated at the start of the epidemic, was incorrect, and only justified in that it could have reduced the risk of masks being stolen from hospitals.

Since these initial reports, many experts have now recommended that the public wear masks.

The patient association has appealed to the government to make a small number of masks available to each resident, once hospitals have received adequate stock.
