The accident occurred on the N27 at 3.30am on Tuesday morning. The vehicle, carrying two people, came off the road near Michelau, hitting a road sign, a stone pillar and a wall. Both driver and passenger suffered light injuries.
However, when the driver arrived at the police station, officers noticed he was sporting injuries which could not have been caused by the road accident. It transpired that the driver had been inebriated at the time of the crash, and that his passenger had physically attacked him after the accident.
Friends who had been following the vehicle said they had tried to bring calm to the situation, but had been attacked themselves. One woman received a blow to the face and suffered a cut on her hand.
The driver had his licence confiscated and received a driving ban, while charges have been raised against the aggressor for assault.
