The initial law would have made smoke detectors mandatory in January this year. On  Thursday morning, the parliamentary committee on home affairs decided to implement the new law only in 2020.

The committee requires more time to prepare the legislative framework of the new regulation and solve persisting insurance issues. Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding stressed that the committee is seeking to establish a dialogue with the association of insurance companies ACA.

As a further benefit, this gives households another year to get their smoke detectors installed.

The idea behind the regulation is to make smoke detectors mandatory for buildings that have more than one living space - but without penalties.
