Benu VillageOver 100 firefighters respond to Esch fire as nine people injured in Boxing Day traffic accidents

Luxembourg police are looking for witnesses to a major fire that broke out on rue d'Audun in Esch-sur-Alzette on Tuesday evening.

The fire gutted a building in the Benu Village, Luxembourg’s first eco-village, which had recently run into financial difficulties.

Anyone with useful information is urged to contact the Esch police station via telephone ((+352) 244 50 1000 or via e-mail (Police.ESCH@police.etat.lu.)

In addition, rue d’Audun and Boulevard Prince Henri will remain closed to traffic until late Wednesday afternoon between the junctions with rue Zénon Bernard and rue Nelson Mandela due to the fire brigade’s intervention.

The authorities were further called into service for a number of traffic accidents Boxing Day.

A first accident was reported at around 4.40 pm, when a car drove into a ditch on Avenue de l’Europe in Rollingen. Five people were injured and attended to by ambulances from the Pétange, Sanem-Differdange and Esch emergency centres. Also at the scene were the Pétange and Käerjeng fire brigades.

Two further people were injured after two cars collided on rue Leo Laval in Leudelange at 6.12 pm. Here, the Luxembourg-City ambulance was deployed, as well as the Luxembourg-City and Leudelange fire brigades.

The authorities also reported two further car collisions at around 7.10 pm on the N7 and shortly before 8 pm in Mersch. Each collision produced a further injury.

There was also a chimney fire in Volmerange-les-Mines (FR) at around 7.30 pm. The fire brigade from Dudelange were called into action here.
