While the law allows for an extension of up to nine months in specific circumstances, a further third of requests took up to 14 months to be processed. 777 decisions remained pending even after 21 months. Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden disclosed these statistics in response to a parliamentary question by Green Party MP Meris Šehović.
These decisions also include people who fall under the so-called “Dublin 3 Regulation,” in which Luxembourg sometimes only became responsible one year after the application was submitted.
Minister Gloden outlined a multitude of reasons contributing to these delays. Each case is assessed individually, and those involved have the right to request justification from the ministry. Gloden also attributed delays to various international crises.
The Minister underscored the current government’s commitment to reduce these delays.
