Last winter, general practioners saw peaks of up to 2,500 patients presenting with flu symptoms. The Ministry of Health confirmed that flu cases were higher than in the three previous winter seasons.

Despite this surge, vaccination coverage remains low. Only 42% of people over the age of 65 were vaccinated against the flu, a figure that falls below the EU average and lags behind neighbouring Belgium and France.

The Ministry acknowledged that Luxembourg could improve its vaccination rates but underlined that, for now, only doctors are authorised to administer flu shots. Unlike in other countries, pharmacists are not permitted to give vaccinations.

This point was raised in parliament by LSAP MP Mars Di Bartolomeo, who questioned Health Minister Martine Deprez.
