Belgian supermarket strikesOGBL expresses solidarity with Delhaize employees

RTL Today
The Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation said it supports strike action by Belgian Delhaize employees, particularly those working at the Arlon store.

In a press release issued on Friday, the independent trade union said Delhaize had survived the pandemic much like other supermarket chains, and was not currently experiencing financial difficulties.

The chain has decided to run all 128 of its Belgian supermarkets as a franchise in future, removing them from the group in favour of independent managers under the Delhaize brand.

Some 9,000 employees in Belgium have opposed the plan.

The management of Delhaize Luxembourg told the OGBL union that the financial situation for Luxembourg’s stores was good, but said they could not rule out a similar franchise decision for the Grand Duchy in future.

The OGBL said they supported strike and protest action on behalf of the Belgian employees, particularly singling out the Arlon store.
