Caritas scandal falloutNumerous landlords still awaiting rent payments

Landlords affected by the Caritas scandal are still waiting for overdue payments, as the organisation's successor HUT negotiates new contracts and Caritas works to repay its creditors.

In the aftermath of the Caritas scandal, many landlords are still awaiting their rent payments.

Some rental contracts originally managed by Caritas have been transferred to Help on the Ground (HUT), the organisation that assumed the majority of Caritas’ national activities. However, other contracts remain with Caritas, which is striving to secure the necessary funds to settle its outstanding debts.

Landlords who participated in Caritas’ social rental scheme continue to face uncertainty over unpaid rents.

Meanwhile, HUT has reached an agreement with the Ministry for 76 social rental properties. Due to the ongoing reconciliation processes, ministry officials have not yet been able to confirm the total number of landlords affected by these unpaid rents.

HUT is currently renegotiating new contracts for the social housing units it inherited from Caritas. In some cases, tenants of former Caritas properties have even had to relocate to other locations.

For its part, Caritas has stated that it is actively working to gather the funds needed to repay creditors.

This information was shared by Minister of Housing and Spatial Planning Claude Meisch in response to a parliamentary question posed by MP Sven Clement of the Pirate Party.
